What causes tire screeching?

The sound of screeching tires might seem normal to some, or even an exciting display on the road, but in reality, it could be a silent warning sign, an indication of an imbalance, or even evidence of internal damage to one of the tires.

According to a 2022 report by the National Safety Council (NSC), 12% of accidents involving loss of vehicle control are attributed to unexpected tire screeching that occurred at moderate or low speeds, often due to improper tire pressure or a defect in the tire type.

In this article, we will explain in detail what causes this sound, when it's normal, when it becomes a real problem, and most importantly, how to avoid it and choose the right tire to ensure a quiet and safe drive.

What is tire screeching, and what causes it physically?

Tire screeching is the sound of a tire sliding on the road surface when it momentarily loses traction. It typically occurs when the propulsion or braking force exceeds the tire's grip capability, causing it to slide. The sound produced results from the friction of the rubber against dry or wet ground.

Scientifically, this phenomenon is called "loss of traction" or momentary loss of grip. It results from a sudden difference in speed between the tire's rotation and the road surface. The smoother the road surface, the more inappropriate the pressure, or the more worn the tire tread, the higher the likelihood of hearing this sound.

In a 2020 survey conducted by Bridgestone among over 1,500 drivers in the Middle East, 39% of participants reported hearing tire screeching in their cars during the past three months without knowing the cause, while it was found that more than half of those cases were related to issues with tire pressure or tread.

Common Causes of Tire Screeching:

There are many reasons for tire screeching, some intentional and others related to technical aspects of the tires and their condition. Here are the most common causes of tire screeching:

  1. Over- or Under-Inflation of Tires:

If the air pressure inside the tire is less or more than recommended, the contact patch with the road changes, increasing the likelihood of skidding.

Furthermore, an over-inflated tire leads to less contact with the surface, and thus less grip. The opposite is also true: an under-inflated tire becomes flattened and increases its side friction, creating a louder sound when turning.

According to a 2021 study by the Continental Research Institute, 47% of momentary skidding incidents in civilian cars are caused by unbalanced pressure among the four tires.
  1. Sudden Acceleration or Braking:

When suddenly pressing the accelerator or brake pedal, especially on turns, the tire is forced to rapidly change its dynamic state, leading to temporary skidding and a distinct screeching sound. While this might be normal in some cases, it intensifies if the tires are damaged or the ground is slippery.

  1. Poor Tire Quality:

Tires made from low-quality rubber lack sufficient grip, and consequently, produce screeching sounds even under moderate driving conditions.

Some cheap commercial tires also lack groove guidance and water drainage technology, which doubles the risk of skidding.

  1. Slippery, Wet, or Sandy Roads:

When is tire squealing a sign of danger?

There are several situations where tire squealing indicates a general danger with the vehicle, and these include:

  1. Constant overloading of the vehicle:

When the car is overloaded, the pressure on the tires increases, raising the likelihood of skidding and tire squealing when turning or accelerating.

  1. Using tires unsuitable for the driving conditions:

Some drivers use tires designed for smooth roads in environments that demand higher grip, such as mountainous or desert areas, which results in poor acoustic and frictional response.

  1. Slow brake system response or weak stability systems:

If the ABS and ESP systems are not functioning efficiently, the car loses its ability to properly distribute braking force, leading to tire skidding with every sudden stop.

How to avoid tire screeching?

Experts always advise keeping an eye on tire behavior in all conditions, because some sounds might be temporary or due to an overload or a change in road temperature, while others indicate a real problem that needs immediate attention. Therefore, you should do the following:

  • Check tire pressure every two weeks.
  • Do not accelerate or brake suddenly, especially on turns.
  • Rotate the tires every 10,000 km to ensure even wear.
  • Check the suspension system and alignment during every routine maintenance.
  • Use reliable and approved tires.

According to a 2021 report by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 37% of tire-related loss of control incidents were due to improper pressure or using tires unsuitable for the road type.

The same study indicated that adhering to routine maintenance (including checking pressure, alignment, and using the appropriate tire type) reduces sudden skidding accidents by up to 41%.

Consequently, regular maintenance, the correct tire choice, and moderate driving behavior are all effective factors in avoiding unwanted tire screeching sounds.
